Cleansing Mind – Body - Spirit

The Temazcal (Sweat Lodge) is a ancient Indian purification ritual to cleanse the mind, body and spirit.

The traditional Mexican sweat bath differs in several ways from the northern American Indian tribes. It is not primarily used for ceremonial purposes, as is the sweat lodge of the American Indians, nor for relaxation or bodily cleansing or for general well-being, as are most of the other sweat baths such as saunas and hot springs . It is and was, as far back as it can be traced in Mexico, a therapeutic and medicinal instrument, an arm of the medical practices developed in what anthropologists like to call, Mesoamerica, that vast area that now includes Mexico, Guatemala and Belize.

In its ancient forms, it is known best through the Aztecs. Temazcal, as it is still called in contemporary Mexico , is a Nahuatl word, taken from their language. I t can be a very spiritual experience during which participants may enter a meditative state, feel deep emotional release or see visions, although for others it is more a physical cleansing experience which leaves them feeling invigorated and relaxed at the same time.
